Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has reportedly accepted an offer to serve as the running mate to the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, ahead of the next presidential election.

The development was confirmed on Saturday by a prominent figure within the party in Rivers State, Leader Sampson, who disclosed that Amaechi had agreed to take up the vice-presidential position.

Amaechi, who previously contested the ADC presidential primary, lost to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar after a keenly contested exercise. Before the primary election, the former minister had publicly maintained that his ambition was solely for the presidency, insisting that he did not purchase the party’s nomination form with the intention of later accepting a vice-presidential slot.

Following the conclusion of the primary, Amaechi openly rejected the outcome, amid allegations by some dissatisfied party members that the process had been manipulated in favour of Atiku.

However, when asked to clarify reports that the former Rivers State governor had now accepted the vice-presidential role, Leader Sampson gave a brief but affirmative response, saying, “Yes.”

The reported decision is expected to reshape political calculations within the ADC as preparations for the presidential election continue.
