Fire Destroys Popular Kano Market, Goods Worth Millions Lost

According to Ireporter Online, a late-night inferno has devastated the Kingsway home appliances market along Murtala Muhammad Way in Kano State, destroying scores of shops and goods valued at several millions of naira and leaving traders in shock and distress.

The fire reportedly began around 10 p.m. on Thursday and raged for several hours before firefighters succeeded in bringing it under control on Friday morning. The market, known for selling fairly used household appliances such as refrigerators, air conditioners, carpets, doors, chairs, tables and cushions, was largely consumed by the blaze, with traders lamenting that only a few items were salvaged before the flames spread uncontrollably. One affected trader, Kabiru Idris Muhammad, said the destruction was severe, noting that over 10 fire trucks were deployed by the Kano State Fire Service, but the intensity of the fire left almost nothing recoverable. He added that dozens of temporary shops were destroyed, with some traders reportedly losing multiple stalls, while a courier service office was also impacted.

Another trader, Usama Usman, described the incident as devastating, saying many shop owners only learned of the fire after it had already engulfed a large section of the market. By the time they arrived, he said, the damage was already extensive, leaving several businesses completely wiped out and traders uncertain about restarting operations.

The Kano State Fire Service confirmed the incident, stating that preliminary investigations indicated the fire may have been triggered by an electrical spark. According to the agency, emergency responders arrived to find a one-storey building and an adjoining open commercial area already engulfed in flames, with the inferno spreading from a salvage yard before affecting parts of the building complex. Several offices, storage rooms, and facilities were also damaged, although no casualties were reported. The Director of the Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, urged residents and traders to prioritize fire safety measures, especially in commercial areas, and to ensure swift reporting of any fire outbreak to emergency services.
