Labour Party Unveils 1,211 Candidates Ahead Of 2027

The Labour Party (LP) has officially ratified 1,211 candidates to contest various elective positions on its platform in the 2027 general elections, reinforcing its preparations for the nationwide polls.

According to Ireporter Online, the decision was approved during the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Abuja on Thursday, following the successful conclusion of its nationwide primary elections conducted on May 27.

The primaries covered 1,491 elective positions, including 28 governorship seats, 99 senatorial positions, 307 House of Representatives seats, and 776 state assembly constituencies. The party also endorsed Chibuzo Okereke as its consensus presidential candidate for the 2027 election.

Addressing party members during the NEC meeting, Abia State Governor Alex Otti, represented by his deputy, Ikechukwu Emetu, urged all candidates to put the primary contests behind them and unite in pursuit of electoral victory.

He emphasized that internal elections should not create lasting divisions, noting that the real task of securing victory in the general elections had only just begun. Otti warned that political opponents would seek to capitalize on any internal disagreements and called on members to remain united.

He further encouraged the candidates to see themselves as ambassadors of hope and agents of change, stressing the importance of harnessing the experience, strength, and networks of everyone who participated in the primaries while speaking with one voice to mobilize support across the country.

Also speaking at the meeting, Labour Party National Chairman Nenadi Usman appealed to members to set aside any grievances arising from the primary elections and embrace reconciliation for the collective good of the party.

Usman described the primaries as successful and said the NEC meeting was convened to formally adopt and ratify the outcomes nationwide. She acknowledged that disagreements are common in every political party but urged aggrieved members to let go of their differences and work together.

She maintained that the Labour Party belongs to all its members and stressed that unity and inclusiveness remain essential if the party is to strengthen its base and position itself for victory in the 2027 general elections.
