Tinubu Issues Fresh Orders To INEC, Security Agencies Ahead Of Ekiti, Osun Polls
According to Ireporter Online, President Bola Tinubu has cautioned that democracy can only thrive where citizens maintain confidence in the electoral process, warning that loss of trust could undermine the system.
The President made the remarks during his Democracy Day address on Friday, where he also reflected on Nigeria’s democratic progress since 1999 and paid tribute to individuals who contributed to the country’s pro-democracy struggle. He urged the Independent National Electoral Commission Independent National Electoral Commission, security agencies, political parties, the legislature, judiciary, media and civil society to ensure that the upcoming governorship elections in Ekiti State and Osun State are conducted in a peaceful, transparent and credible manner.
Tinubu stressed that democracy becomes weakened when citizens begin to doubt electoral outcomes, adding that all stakeholders must work collectively to safeguard the integrity of elections. He also emphasized that Nigeria’s uninterrupted civilian rule since 1999 remains a milestone worth protecting, noting that the nation has consistently witnessed elections, peaceful transitions and institutional resolution of disputes rather than violence.
Reiterating his message to Nigerians, the President called on young people to remain committed to nation-building, urging them to stay in the country, contribute to development and participate actively in governance. He further commended security agencies, traditional rulers, religious leaders and community stakeholders for their roles in maintaining peace and national cohesion.
Tinubu also used the occasion to honour democracy activists, journalists, labour leaders and other Nigerians who endured hardship, persecution and sacrifice during the struggle for democratic governance, describing their contributions as the foundation of the country’s present political system.
