Kebbi University 300-Level Student K!lled By Suspected Thieves In Off-Campus Hostel
According to Ireporter Online, a 300-level Biochemistry student of the Federal University Birnin Kebbi (FUBK), Zaharadeen Nuhu, has died after he was attacked by suspected thieves at a private hostel in Kalgo Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
The deceased, who hailed from Niger State, reportedly sustained severe machete wounds during the violent attack at his off-campus residence. The incident was confirmed in a circular issued by the university’s Dean of Student Affairs, Professor Ibrahim Magawata, on Thursday, June 11, 2026, and made available to journalists in Birnin Kebbi. The circular stated that the student was assaulted by a group of suspected thieves at a private hostel where several students reside. He was rushed to a medical facility for treatment but was later pronounced dead in the early hours of Thursday.
Professor Magawata, in the statement, expressed sorrow over the incident, noting that the university had reported the case to the Nigeria Police Force, Kalgo Division, and an investigation had already commenced. He added that the institution had intensified security patrols around Kalgo and other off-campus locations housing students, while also engaging hostel owners on the need to improve safety measures, including better lighting and the deployment of night security personnel.
The university urged students to remain calm, law-abiding, and vigilant, advising them to avoid late-night movements, travel in groups where necessary, and promptly report suspicious activities to security agencies. It also cautioned against the spread of unverified information capable of causing panic within the campus community.
Meanwhile, some students who spoke anonymously expressed concern over growing insecurity in off-campus hostels, alleging repeated cases of attacks, phone snatching, and harassment in such areas. They called on authorities and hostel operators to urgently strengthen security arrangements to prevent further tragedies. The deceased was laid to rest on Thursday following Janazah prayers held at the mosque of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Birnin Kebbi, as the university extended condolences to his family and the student community.
