BREAKING: Government Switches To Euro, Enters Borderless Europe Club
Croatia adopted the euro on Sunday and entered Europe’s passport-free zone, marking two major milestones for the country since joining the EU nearly a decade ago.
At midnight (2300 GMT Saturday), the Balkan country said goodbye to its kuna currency and became the eurozone’s 20th member.
It is now the world’s 27th member of the passport-free Schengen zone, which allows more than 400 million people to freely travel among its members.
EU Commissioner Ursula von der Leyen will visit Croatia later Sunday to commemorate the historic occasion.
According to experts, adopting the euro will help protect Croatia’s economy at a time when global inflation is skyrocketing as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which has sent food and fuel prices through the roof.
Croatians, on the other hand, have mixed feelings. While they welcome the elimination of border controls, some are concerned about the euro’s adoption, with right-wing opposition groups claiming that it only benefits large countries such as Germany and France.
“We will cry for our kuna, prices will soar,” said Drazen Golemac, a 63-year-old pensioner from Zagreb.
Many Croatians fear that the introduction of the euro will lead to a hike in prices — in particular that businesses will round up price points when they convert.
