BREAKING: Niger Junta Cuts Food And Water Supplies To Ousted Leader (DETAILS)
The leaders of a military coup in Niger are reportedly subjecting ousted President Mohamed Bazoum to harsh conditions, including depriving him of food, water, and electricity at an army camp where he has been held captive for the past two weeks…CONTINUE READING
Those familiar with the matter revealed that power and water supplies to the camp where Bazoum, along with his wife and son, are being detained, were cut off over the past week.
Additionally, fresh food deliveries to Bazoum’s residence within the presidential guard camp in the capital, Niamey, were withheld a week after his detention.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ spokesman expressed concern over the “deplorable living conditions” that Bazoum and his family are enduring during their arbitrary detention by members of the Presidential Guard in Niger. The spokesman reiterated the Secretary-General’s call for Bazoum’s immediate and unconditional release and his reinstatement as head of state, emphasizing concerns for his health and safety.
Bazoum was ousted on July 26 by a group of soldiers led by General Abdourahamane Tiani. The junta missed a deadline set by regional leaders to relinquish power by August 6. Instead, they announced the formation of a 21-member cabinet, with military officers taking key roles such as defense, security, and interior ministers.
A meeting of heads of state from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is scheduled in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, to discuss the failure of Tiani to reinstate Bazoum. The ECOWAS bloc had warned of potential military force to remove the coup leaders.
Bazoum has engaged with officials attempting to mediate the dispute, including Chadian President Mahamat Deby, and supports dialogue to resolve the political crisis in the country.
