President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of the National Health Technology and Data Analytics Office (NHTDAO) and appointed Dr Obi Adigwe as its pioneer National Coordinator.

According to Ireporter Online, the announcement was contained in a statement issued on Friday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

The new agency will be domiciled within the Office of the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare and is designed to function as a meta-level national platform for coordinating Nigeria’s digital health agenda.

It is expected to strengthen, rather than replace, the statutory responsibilities of existing health institutions while ensuring better coordination across the health sector. The office will also harmonise both public and private health systems, establish operational standards, and drive the implementation of the National Digital Health Architecture, which was approved by the National Council on Health in November 2025.

Dr Obi Adigwe, who has been appointed as National Coordinator, currently serves as Director General of the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development. He is noted for his work in advancing science-driven innovation, including artificial intelligence applications, translational research, and technology transfer in Nigeria’s health sector.

His track record includes coordinating major initiatives such as the ¥300 million Nanotechnology grant and the AFREXIMBank-supported funding for Africa’s first Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) training facility. He also played a leading role in developing the roadmap that secured an €18 million European Union grant, described as one of the largest in Africa within its category. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he gained international recognition for research efforts that challenged claims surrounding the Covid Organics preparation.

The Steering Committee overseeing the NHTDAO will provide strategic direction and oversight and is chaired by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, CON, alongside Mr Olaniyi Yusuf, Chairman of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group.

Other members include the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Iziaq Adekunle Salako; senior officials from the Federal Ministry of Health; representatives from the National Information Technology Development Agency; and key stakeholders across national health agencies, digital economy, and private sector institutions.

President Tinubu is expected to leverage the NHTDAO to accelerate Nigeria’s transition toward a secure, interoperable, and data-driven healthcare system aimed at improving health outcomes nationwide in line with his Renewed Hope Agenda.
