Chaos In Warri: Angry Itsekiri Natives Lock Down 28,000-Barrel Oil Facility
Operations at a 28,000-barrel-per-day oil refinery in Ogidigben, Warri, Delta State, came to an abrupt halt on Wednesday after angry Itsekiri natives shut down the facility……..READ MORE
A video clip aired by TVC showed hundreds of locals gathered at the refinery’s entrance, protesting and demanding attention to their grievances.
Ireporter gathered that the affected facility, once operated by Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), is now under the management of Renaissance Africa Energy Holdings.
The protest involved men, women, and youths from the Ogidigben community and is said to have been triggered by recent recommendations made by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) concerning the delineation of wards and polling units in the Warri Federal Constituency.
Tensions have risen in the area as the protesters warned that unless immediate action is taken, they may extend their demonstrations to other critical national assets located within Itsekiri territory.
This action comes just a week after the Supreme Court ruling prompted INEC to propose fresh boundary adjustments in the Warri region—moves the locals strongly oppose.
