Dickson Raises Alarm Over Heavy Metal Poisoning Among Bayelsa Residents

Senator Seriake Dickson, representing Bayelsa West Senatorial District, has sounded the alarm about heavy metal poisoning affecting numerous residents of the oil-rich state.

He attributed this dire health issue to the activities of multinational oil corporations operating in the Niger Delta region.

Dickson, also the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ecology and Climate Change, highlighted this concern while receiving the Excellence in Environmental Leadership award from a coalition of 20 non-governmental organizations with a focus on Environment, Ecology, and Climate Change.

The award ceremony took place at the Senate on Wednesday.

The Senator’s proactive approach toward environmental stewardship during his tenure as the Governor of Bayelsa State between 2012 and 2020 was commended.

He established an International Commission on Oil Spills, which assessed environmental damage, attributed responsibility, and formulated a new legal framework for accountability and compensation in the region.

Heavy metal poisoning arises from exposure to toxic elements like lead, mercury, and arsenic, which bind to human cells and hinder organ functions. Symptoms can be life-threatening and result in irreversible damage.

During the award presentation, Dickson revealed that the commission collected blood and soil samples from residents of oil-producing areas.

Laboratory tests confirmed the presence of heavy metal poisoning in their bodies due to air and water pollution. Consumption of contaminated fish from polluted waters further contributed to their exposure.

Dickson brought attention to the issue with multinational oil companies, but rather than addressing the problem, they allegedly opposed him.

He urged his successor to take decisive action against the recurring health crisis.

As Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ecology and Climate Change, Dickson pledged to collaborate with NGOs, institutions, and stakeholders to tackle environmental challenges, including the campaign against climate change.

He expressed his commitment to use his position to make a difference and promote environmentally sustainable practices.
