The winners of Sunday’s FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and Spain will make history as they become the first team in the tournament’s history to receive specially designed championship rings alongside the prestigious trophy.

According to reports, FIFA will present 30 exclusive rings to members of the victorious squad, while an additional 1,996 replica versions will be produced for supporters worldwide. The custom-made rings will feature a miniature World Cup trophy design and carry an engraved inner band, drawing inspiration from the long-established championship ring tradition in American sports, particularly competitions such as the NFL’s Super Bowl.

United States President Donald Trump is expected to be part of the closing ceremony at MetLife Stadium, New Jersey, where he will present the World Cup trophy to the eventual winners. His attendance at the final has been confirmed by FIFA President Gianni Infantino and White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, despite Trump not having attended any of the tournament’s 102 matches so far.

Trump’s involvement comes amid controversy surrounding the competition after he previously contacted Infantino seeking a review of the red card issued to United States forward Folarin Balogun. FIFA later overturned the striker’s automatic suspension, a decision that sparked criticism and raised concerns from some quarters about fairness and consistency in tournament decisions.

Balogun was subsequently allowed to feature in the United States’ last-16 encounter against Belgium, although the host nation eventually exited the tournament following a 4-1 defeat. Appeals from other teams, including France and England over separate disciplinary matters, did not result in similar suspensions being overturned.

Meanwhile, officials have confirmed that air quality alerts remain active in parts of New York due to wildfire smoke drifting from Canada. However, there are currently no indications that the environmental conditions will affect Sunday’s World Cup final.

Trump has maintained a strong presence at major sporting events during his time in office, attending high-profile competitions including the FIFA Club World Cup final, Super Bowl, US Open, NBA Finals and Ryder Cup. The appearance of leaders from host countries at World Cup finals is also a common tradition.

The United States is hosting the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico, with the final stages of the tournament taking place on American soil. England and France will compete in the third-place play-off on Saturday before Argentina and Spain face off on Sunday for global football’s biggest prize.
