Gov. Oyebanji Pays Visit To Rescued Ekiti Church Worshippers

According to Ireporter Online, the Governor of Biodun Oyebanji on Sunday paid a visit to worshippers from Eda-Oniyo in Ilejemeje Local Government Area of Ekiti State who recently regained freedom after spending over two months in captivity.

The victims, who were released on Saturday, are currently receiving medical attention at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, where they are being treated for injuries and trauma sustained during their ordeal.

During the visit, Governor Oyebanji expressed relief at their recovery, noting that he was particularly moved to see a young child regain consciousness. He reaffirmed that his administration would cover the full cost of their medical care as well as psychological rehabilitation, describing the incident as a painful reminder of the government’s responsibility to protect lives and property.

He further stressed that security remains a fundamental right of every citizen, pledging continued collaboration with the Federal Government and security agencies to rid the state of criminal elements. The governor also commended the bravery of security operatives and the Eda-Oniyo community for their role in ensuring the victims’ eventual release.

In a related account, community leaders disclosed that about ₦25.5 million was reportedly raised through contributions and loans to secure the victims’ freedom, even as they confirmed that one person was killed during the attack. The community, however, supported the government’s stance against ransom payments, warning that such practices could encourage further kidnappings.

The victims were abducted in April 2026 during an attack on an open-air revival organised by the Christ Apostolic Church in Eda-Oniyo, when armed assailants stormed the venue, opened fire, and killed a pastor identified as the revival leader. Several worshippers were injured, while others were taken away by the attackers, sparking widespread outrage and protests across the state.

The incident had triggered tension in the community, with residents demanding stronger security measures after the abductors held the victims for weeks before their eventual release.
