How I Was Robbed Of Africa Player Of The Year Award – Mikel
Mikel Obi, the former captain of the Super Eagles, has sparked a new debate about the Africa Player of the Year Award.
Mikel claimed in an interview with Dubai Eye 103.8 that he was ‘criminally robbed’ of the 2013 edition after a successful season for both club and country.
Despite winning the UEFA Champions League in 2012, as well as the Africa Cup of Nations and the Europa League in 2013, the Nigerian was beaten to the award by Yaya Toure of Ivory Coast and Manchester City.

Yaya won it for the third year in a row, as the Chelsea legend claimed he received a call from someone he didn’t name before the ceremony informing him he had won the award, but that was not the case in Lagos, Nigeria, where the awards were held.
“I was robbed. Before I went, I was told that I won it. I was at the airport flying to Nigeria, because the ceremony was in Nigeria, and guess what happened? Manchester City was playing, and Yaya scored a hat-trick or two goals
“I knew I had won it. It doesn’t matter how many goals he scored. I was in my prime, playing a lot of games. You could have seen the ceremony. Before it was even announced, everybody left the stage, people left,” Mikel said.
