The tribunal has furthermore instructed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to retract the certificate of return that was previously granted to Yerima.

The petitioner, Hafizu Kawu, hailing from the All Progressives Congress (APC), lodged a complaint against Yerima’s victory, asserting that Yerima lacked the necessary qualifications.

INEC had declared Yerima as the victor in the House of Representatives election for Tarauni Federal Constituency.

However, as reported by Daily Trust, the tribunal’s three-judge panel, headed by Justice I.P. Chima, concluded that Yerima did not meet the eligibility criteria due to his falsification of his primary school certificate.

The tribunal held that Yerima’s argument of undergoing a name change in 2022 was not valid, given that he had been using three different names (Umar Mukhtar Zakari) on his international passports since 2009, while his primary school certificate still bore the name Umar Mukhtar.

Additionally, the tribunal determined that the primary school in question, Hausawa Primary School, had disavowed the certificate presented by the ousted lawmaker.

Consequently, the NNPP was found to lack a legitimate candidate in the election.
