President Tinubu, speaking on Thursday in Abuja during the opening of ECOWAS’ second extraordinary session focused on the Niger Republic situation, stressed that the regional bloc must engage with the leaders of the coup in the neighboring country to reinstate President Mohamed Bazoum.

He stated, “In upholding our unwavering commitment to democracy, human rights, and the welfare of the people of Niger, it is vital that we place diplomatic negotiations and dialogue at the forefront of our strategy.”

“We should engage all parties involved, including the coup leaders, in sincere talks to persuade them to relinquish power and restore President Bazoum. It is our responsibility to explore every avenue of engagement to facilitate a swift return to constitutional governance in Niger,” Tinubu added.

Tinubu also highlighted the broader implications of the coup in Niger for democratically elected governments within the sub-region. He acknowledged that the crisis not only jeopardizes the nation’s stability but also has far-reaching consequences for the entire West African region.

He underlined the importance of adhering to democratic principles, good governance, and the rule of law in restoring peace, stability, and prosperity in the Republic of Niger. He expressed optimism that these efforts would create an environment conducive to growth and development.

After President Tinubu’s address, the meeting proceeded to a closed-door session, during which significant decisions are expected to be made.

ECOWAS has been grappling with a series of coups among its member states since 2020. In response to the coup in Niger, the bloc had given the military leaders until a specific deadline to reinstate President Bazoum or potentially face the use of force. Despite the regional efforts, the coup leaders did not comply with the deadline, leading to a continuing crisis.
