JUST IN: Two Chinese ‘Police Stations’ Uncovered (DETAILS)

Authorities have confirmed that China has established at least two “police stations” in Germany, raising new concerns about the overseas centers that critics say are used to harass dissidents.

According to the interior ministry, the German setups do not have permanent offices and are overseen by private individuals from the Chinese diaspora.

“Chinese authorities have no executive powers on (German territory),” the ministry said Thursday, in reply to a question from a lawmaker.

“The German government is in contact with the Chinese embassy about this matter.”

Earlier this year, the Spanish-based NGO Safeguard Defenders reported that China had established 54 overseas police stations around the world, which are sometimes used to target Chinese Communist Party critics.

The information was disclosed thanks to the request of German lawmaker Joana Cotar, who said it was a “outright scandal” that the government only revealed the details when asked and that it “simply accepts” the stations’ existence.

“If they were to act according to the law, then these structures — however they look — would be dissolved immediately,” said Cotar, who was until recently an MP with the far-right AfD party.

Germany welcomed prominent Chinese dissidents such as writer Liao Yiwu, who was imprisoned in China for his critical writings, and Liu Xia, wife of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Liu Xiaobo.

The international community is becoming increasingly concerned about the stations.

The Czech foreign minister announced on Thursday that China had closed two such centers in Prague.

In October, Dutch authorities said they were looking into reports that at least two people in the Netherlands were being harassed by Beijing.

Earlier this month, the Chinese ambassador to Ottawa was summoned in response to reports that China was establishing stations in the Toronto area.

China has previously denied conducting policing operations on foreign soil, claiming that its overseas “service stations” assist Chinese citizens with tasks such as renewing driver’s licenses.
