Bola Tinubu Speaks On Reported Plan To Change Nigeria’s Name, Abolish Sharia Law

According to Ireporter Online, the Presidency has dismissed reports alleging that President Bola Tinubu is planning to rename Nigeria as the “United States of Nigeria” or abolish Sharia Law in the northern region, describing the claims as false and politically motivated.

The clarification was contained in a statement issued on Thursday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who said the reports were based on anonymous sources and were aimed at creating tension and political instability ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Presidency stressed that there is no such constitutional amendment proposal before the administration, including any so-called “Project True Federation,” adding that President Tinubu has no intention of sending any related bill to the National Assembly.

It further explained that constitutional amendments in Nigeria follow a strict and rigorous process, requiring approval by a two-thirds majority in both chambers of the National Assembly as well as the endorsement of at least 24 State Houses of Assembly, making it impossible for such changes to be made unilaterally.

The statement emphasized that Bola Tinubu is currently focused on economic reforms and delivering governance outcomes rather than engaging in divisive political debates, while urging Nigerians to disregard what it described as fake and destabilizing reports circulating in the public space.

The Presidency also warned that misinformation is likely to increase as political activities intensify, advising citizens to verify information and avoid content designed to inflame tensions or mislead the public.
