Prices Of Tomatoes, Onions, Beans, Garri Skyrocket Nationwide

According to Ireporter Online, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has revealed that the prices of several essential food commodities, including tomatoes, beans, garri, onions, ginger, and palm oil, recorded a general increase on a month-on-month basis in April 2026.

The NBS made this known in its Selected Food Prices Watch report for April 2026, published in Abuja on Tuesday. The report showed that the average price of one kilogramme of tomatoes rose by 6.60 per cent, increasing from ₦1,104.85 in March 2026 to ₦1,177.92 in April 2026. However, despite the monthly rise, the price of tomatoes declined by 8.23 per cent when compared with April 2025.

Similarly, the price of one kilogramme of brown beans increased marginally by 0.99 per cent, moving from ₦1,325.85 in March 2026 to ₦1,338.93 in April 2026. The report, however, indicated a significant year-on-year decline of 44.89 per cent from ₦2,429.39 recorded in April 2025.

White garri also recorded a slight increase of 0.93 per cent on a monthly basis, rising from ₦801.54 to ₦808.96. On a yearly comparison, however, the commodity fell sharply by 39.86 per cent from ₦1,345.10 in April 2025.

The NBS further stated that the average price of one kilogramme of onions increased by 0.98 per cent from ₦1,153.14 in March 2026 to ₦1,164.39 in April 2026, although it remained 22.56 per cent lower than its April 2025 price of ₦1,503.56.

Fresh ginger recorded a 0.73 per cent monthly increase, rising from ₦5,541.25 to ₦5,581.82, and also posted a 12.30 per cent year-on-year increase from ₦4,970.66 in April 2025.

Palm oil experienced a marginal monthly rise of 0.12 per cent, increasing from ₦2,393.38 to ₦2,396.32, while also recording a 4.77 per cent year-on-year increase from ₦2,516.36 in April 2025.

A breakdown by state revealed significant price variations across the country. Bayelsa recorded the highest average price of tomatoes at ₦1,600.73, while Plateau posted the lowest at ₦730.48. For brown beans, Oyo recorded the highest price at ₦1,938.91, whereas Taraba recorded the lowest at ₦750.

In the garri market, Abia recorded the highest price at ₦1,075.47, while Plateau had the lowest at ₦517.94. Onion prices were highest in Abia at ₦2,115.67, with Kwara recording the lowest at ₦684.38. For onion bulb, Abia again topped the chart at ₦2,191.63, while Nasarawa recorded the lowest at ₦832.16. Palm oil prices peaked in Ekiti at ₦2,819.09, while Abia recorded the lowest at ₦2,024.41.

On a zonal basis, the South-South recorded the highest average price of tomatoes at ₦1,561.10, while the North-West recorded the lowest at ₦822.72. The South-West led in brown beans prices at ₦1,787.09, with the North-East recording the lowest at ₦871.79.

For garri, the South-East posted the highest average price at ₦944.58, while the North-Central recorded the lowest at ₦673.88. The South-East also recorded the highest onion prices at ₦1,735.53, while the North-Central posted the lowest at ₦911.40.

In the fresh ginger category, the South-West recorded the highest average price at ₦6,812.92, while the North-East recorded the lowest at ₦881.12.

Overall, the report highlights a mixed inflation pattern, with several food items recording marginal monthly increases despite notable year-on-year declines in key staples.
