Mohbad: What Transpired As Coroner Held Inaugural Sitting
The inaugural session of the Coroner’s inquiry into the demise of 27-year-old musician IleriOluwa Oladimeji Aloba, known as Mohbad, was convened yesterday at the Candide Johnson Courthouse in Ikorodu, Lagos.
Regrettably, journalists were denied access to cover the proceedings. Court officials explained that this directive came from the Chief Registrar, Tajideed Elias. This measure was reportedly taken to manage the crowd.

After the session, the family’s legal representative, Funmi Falana, informed reporters that Magistrate Adetayo Shotobi discussed the procedures for the inquest with all counsel, including how witnesses will give their testimony. She added that the legal team will present their witnesses at the next hearing scheduled for October 13.
“The purpose of the coroner’s inquiry is to investigate the cause of death. It is an inquisitorial proceeding, so today’s session was to establish the procedures for how and when witnesses will testify.”
Other concerned parties present at the session included the Lagos State Ministry of Justice and the record label, TNKAY Music.
The inquest is in accordance with the applicable provisions of sections 14 and 15 of the Coroner’s System Law of Lagos State, cap C15, laws of Lagos State 2015.
This follows a letter from the chambers of Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, to the office of the Chief Coroner regarding the controversial death.
Mohbad passed away on Tuesday, September 12, under circumstances that led to significant public outcry and numerous protests. Many called for a thorough investigation into the musician’s sudden passing.
Prior to his demise, he made several allegations of mistreatment and harassment by his former manager, Naira Marley, who owns the record label Marlian Music.
He was laid to rest the following day. A few days later, the police authorities exhumed the singer’s body from his gravesite in Ikorodu.
Although an autopsy has been conducted, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin, stated that the results are pending.
Falana had formally requested a coroner’s inquest into the circumstances surrounding the musician’s passing.
In a letter addressed to the Chief Coroner of the High Court of Lagos State in Ikeja, Falana expressed deep concern about what he referred to as a “very tragic death.”
He cited the Lagos State Coroner’s Law of 2007, specifically Section 15, which stipulates that an inquest should be conducted when a coroner becomes aware of a death within their district that results from violent, unnatural, or suspicious circumstances.
The letter, dated September 18, 2023, signed and shared by Folakemi Falana via Instagram on behalf of the law firm, Falana & Associates, emphasized the urgent need for an investigation into Mohbad’s death within Lagos State. It further read, “We hereby request Your Lordship to conduct an inquest into the circumstances surrounding the tragic death in Lagos State, and we are confident that Your Lordship will accede to our request with utmost urgency.”
