NIGERIANS UNDER FIRE: NLC Explodes Over Jaw-Dropping 50% Telecom Tariff Hike
The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) is calling on subscribers to oppose the proposed 50 percent increase in telecom tariffs, a plan put forth by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in collaboration with telecom companies.
According to reports from Naija News, the Federal Government approved this 50 percent hike after telecom operators initially sought a 100 percent increase.
This adjustment, marking the first increase in over a decade, aims to rejuvenate the telecom sector, which contributes around 14 percent to Nigeria’s economy.
In a statement posted on its X account, the NLC stated that this increase represents yet another harsh burden for Nigerians and should be rejected.
The statement outlined the new rates: “Reject This Tariff. Calls will rise to N16.50 per minute, up from N11. SMS charges will increase to N6 per message, previously N4. Data bundles will now cost N431.25 per IGB, up from N287.50.”
“50% telecom tariff hike: A burden too severe for Nigerians to bear.”
In an interview with Channels Television on Thursday, NLC President Joe Ajaero emphasized that any tariff increase should involve genuine engagement with stakeholders to explore sustainable alternatives that will not compromise the livelihoods of Nigerians.
He questioned the justification for the proposed increase, especially considering the significant growth within the telecom sector over the years. Ajaero labeled the move an undue financial strain on Nigerians already facing high inflation, soaring transportation costs, rising electricity tariffs, and overall economic decline.
Ajaero further stressed that the proposed tariff increase would exacerbate inflation and worsen the economic hardships experienced by millions of Nigerians.
