End Of An Era: Tinubu Leads Tributes For Late Jeremiah Useni

President Bola Tinubu conveyed his condolences to the government and citizens of Plateau State following the passing of former Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Lieutenant-General Jeremiah Useni (retd.). According to Naija News, the respected elder statesman died on Thursday, January 23, 2025, at the age of 82 after a long illness.

Tinubu extended his sympathy to Useni’s family, friends, military associates, and political colleagues, acknowledging him as a former Governor of old Bendel State, as well as a past Minister of Transport and Quarter-Master General of the Nigerian Army.

The President’s sentiments were articulated in a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, entitled “President Tinubu mourns the passing of former minister of FCT, Lt. Gen. Jeremiah Useni.” The message highlighted Useni’s courage and commitment during his military career, inspiring many young officers to prioritize the nation’s interests over personal advantage. Furthermore, Tinubu recognized Useni’s political contributions as deputy national chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party and as Senator for the Plateau South Senatorial District.

Tinubu hoped that God Almighty would grant eternal peace to Lieutenant-General Useni’s soul and comfort his family.

On the evening of Useni’s death, Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State made the announcement, describing the loss as a substantial blow not just to Useni’s family but also to the Nigerian Armed Forces, Plateau State, and the entire nation. The governor praised General Useni’s exceptional leadership and unwavering commitment to service, which left a lasting mark on Nigeria’s security and political landscape.

After retiring from the military, Useni transitioned into politics, where he continued to serve the nation. He held the position of Deputy Chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party and was elected Senator for Plateau South in 2015 under the People’s Democratic Party.

Governor Mutfwang expressed his condolences, stating, “On behalf of my family, the government, and the peace-loving citizens of Plateau State, I extend my deepest sympathies to the President, the Nigerian Armed Forces, Useni’s immediate family, and all who are mourning this esteemed elder statesman.”
