Project. Agunloye, who held office during Obasanjo’s presidency from 2002 to 2003, is currently facing a seven-count fraud charge related to the $6 billion Mambilla project contract initiated by the Federal Government.

In a statement released on Friday, Agunloye, now the National Secretary of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), contended that Obasanjo is intentionally misrepresenting details about the project. He further alleged that Obasanjo feigned ignorance of the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) contract signed during his presidency, claiming, “Obasanjo later manipulated the facts in public and judicial arenas to shield himself from scrutiny.”

Agunloye implied that his current legal challenges arise from personal disputes involving Obasanjo, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and Leno Adesanya, the proprietor of Sunrise Power Company.

He asserted, “The government wants to portray me as a scapegoat to illustrate systemic corruption to the arbitration panel and diminish Sunrise’s claims. My challenges stem from personal disputes between President Obasanjo and his associates: former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Leno Adesanya, owner of Sunrise Power Company.

“Obasanjo pretended not to know about the BOT contract during his presidency and later distorted the facts in both public and judicial contexts.

“The arbitration proceedings in France arose from decisions made by successive administrations, particularly under President Buhari. In 2017, then-Minister of Power Babatunde Fashola circumvented a 2012 agreement made under President Goodluck Jonathan with Sunrise by awarding the contract to another company.

“Despite recommendations from the Chinese government for an amicable resolution, the Federal Government failed to honor two settlement agreements, prompting Sunrise to return to arbitration.

“The government is disseminating false information and using me as a pawn to distract from the actions of its officials and four former presidents who have been involved in this project over the past two decades.”
