PDP Declares Political Comeback as Former Defectors Return, Coalition Dismissed as Failed Project

The Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Damagum, has announced that numerous former party members who left to join an opposition coalition are now returning to the party’s fold.

According to iReporter Online, Damagum made the statement during the party’s 101st National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Thursday in Abuja. While addressing party stakeholders, he described the coalition as a “failed political experiment” and reaffirmed the PDP’s determination to reclaim power in the 2027 general elections.

The NEC gathering was attended by high-ranking party officials including governors, lawmakers, state chairpersons, and other influential party figures.

Damagum praised the resilience and nationwide structure of the PDP, calling it the only party capable of providing credible leadership and sustaining national unity. He said several individuals who joined the coalition have quietly made their way back, with some even denying they ever left.

“Many who jumped on the coalition bandwagon have already returned to our fold. Some even claim they never left and merely attended a meeting. We accept their confessions without prejudice,” he stated.

The PDP leader further revealed that the influx of returnees extended beyond former PDP members, noting that members of other parties who aligned with the coalition have also abandoned it.

He lauded the PDP governors as the “backbone” of the party and commended the legislative arm for consistently challenging unpopular government policies. According to him, the party’s leadership in the National Assembly has set a commendable example for state legislators across the federation.

Declaring the PDP “ready and poised” to take back power in 2027, Damagum called for internal unity and sincerity during deliberations, urging members to prioritize party interest and national good above personal agendas.

“As we deliberate on the next steps for our great party, I urge us all to be of one mind, to speak truthfully, and to make wise recommendations without prejudice,” he said.
