Power Surge Coming: Nigeria To Add 150MW To Grid As Adelabu Maps Out Energy Strategy

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Adelabu attributed the expected increase to the progress achieved through the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI), a collaboration between Nigeria and Siemens to upgrade and expand the nation’s electricity infrastructure.

“We believe that by year-end, the successful completion of the pilot phase will bring an additional 150 MW to the grid,” the minister said.

Transforming Nigeria’s Energy Landscape

Adelabu highlighted significant strides in the country’s energy sector, emphasizing the importance of global partnerships.

“This bilateral relationship with Germany focuses on energy and electricity support. The name of the game is cooperation, collaboration, and partnership,” he said.

The Siemens project, a key part of this partnership, has already added 750 MW to the transmission grid through the installation of 10 power transformers and 10 mobile substations, eight of which have been commissioned.

Revamping the Grid and Renewable Energy Push

The next phase of the project will involve modernizing 14 existing substations and constructing 23 new ones across Nigeria.

“The national grid is fragile and outdated. Revamping it is crucial for stability,” Adelabu stated.

Beyond immediate upgrades, the minister emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to renewable energy, aiming for net-zero emissions by 2060.

“Germany’s renewable energy technology complements Nigeria’s abundant natural resources. We have the sun and wind; they have the expertise,” he noted, highlighting that over 30 Nigerian states receive at least 10 hours of sunshine daily.

Pioneering Off-Grid Solutions

Adelabu also discussed plans for a distributed power model, advocating for states to have their own power plants to reduce reliance on the national grid and ensure rural electrification.

“This model will safeguard states from grid issues and expand access to electricity in rural areas,” he said.

Germany’s involvement extends to green energy investments, signaling a robust partnership aimed at building sustainable infrastructure to drive Nigeria’s economic growth.
