Power Surge Imminent: Nigeria To Boost Grid Capacity With 150MW Upgrade

Adelabu attributed this anticipated boost to the successful execution of the pilot phase of the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI), a collaborative effort between Nigeria and Siemens designed to modernize the country’s electricity infrastructure.

“By the end of the year, we expect an additional 150MW from the completion of this pilot phase,” Adelabu confirmed.

Transforming Nigeria’s Power Sector

Adelabu detailed remarkable advancements in the energy sector, highlighting the importance of international partnerships, particularly with Germany.

“This collaboration focuses on both energy and electricity. Our bilateral relationship underscores the need for global cooperation and shared expertise,” he noted.

The Siemens project has already delivered significant results, including the installation of 10 power transformers and 10 mobile substations. Eight of these have been commissioned, adding 750MW to the grid’s transmission capacity.

Revamping Infrastructure and Embracing Renewables

Looking ahead, the minister announced plans to revamp 14 existing substations and construct 23 new ones.

“The national grid is outdated and fragile. Revamping it is essential for long-term stability,” Adelabu stated.

He also emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to renewable energy, aligning with the nation’s energy transition goals to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060.

“Germany’s renewable energy technology perfectly complements Nigeria’s natural resources. Together, we aim to harness the power of the sun and wind,” he said.

Off-Grid Solutions for a Resilient Future

In addition to strengthening the national grid, Adelabu proposed a decentralized energy model where states develop their own power generation systems to ensure energy security and rural electrification.

“This approach will shield states from national grid issues and extend power access to underserved areas,” he explained.

With international partnerships and innovative strategies, Nigeria is on track to build a robust energy infrastructure that supports sustainable growth and development.
