President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN) as the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in the Federal Ministry of Justice.

According to Ireporter Online, the appointment followed the approval of Oyedepo’s transfer of service from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to the mainstream Federal Civil Service. The decision was conveyed in a statement issued on Tuesday by the State House Director of Information and Public Relations, Abiodun Oladunjoye.

Official documents indicate that the appointment, which took effect in the public interest, was formalised in a letter dated December 23 and signed by Omolabake Mafe on behalf of the Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission.

Oyedepo’s emergence as DPP fills the vacancy created by the impending retirement of the incumbent, Abubakar Babadoko, who is expected to complete his mandatory eight-year tenure as a director on December 31, 2025.

A graduate of Law from the University of Ilorin in 2007, Oyedepo was called to the Nigerian Bar after attending the Nigerian Law School in 2008. He is expected to bring his extensive legal expertise to bear in strengthening federal prosecutions, reducing dependence on external legal counsel, and enhancing consistency in the Federal Government’s legal strategies.

Before his latest appointment, Oyedepo spent over 15 years at the EFCC, where he built a solid reputation in prosecuting complex economic and financial crimes. He also served as Head of the Commission’s Monitoring Unit and was part of the Federal Government’s legal team in the high-profile Process and Industrial Development (P&ID) arbitration case.
