Prominent Nigerian Politician Is Dead (PHOTO)

Idowu Korede, a former Osun State Commissioner for Environment and Sanitation, has died.

According to sources, Mr Korede died of an illness in Lagos on Saturday night, just hours before the new year.

According to the sources, Mr Korede had been suffering from an undisclosed illness for some time.

The late politician was from the state’s Ilesa East Local Government Area and served as commissioner during the second term of former governor and current Minister of Interior Rauf Aregbesola.

Mr Korede previously served as chairman of the Ilesa East Local Government.

Mr Korede was a prominent member of The Osun Progressives (TOP), an APC faction in Osun loyal to Mr Aregbesola.

The group fought Mr Aregbesola’s successor, Gboyega Oyetola, until the party lost the state governorship election last year.

The APC’s internal crisis was viewed as one of the factors that doomed Mr Oyetola’s re-election bid.

Mr Korede’s transition was confirmed by Timothy Owoeye, Speaker of the State House of Assembly and an APC member.

Mr Owoeye expressed his condolences to the deceased’s family, the people of Ilesa, and APC members.

The speaker in a statement by his Media Aide, Kunle Alabi, described the death as “a big blow to the progressive family in the state.”

“The death of Korede Idowu is a big loss to Ilesa, Osun, as well as the entire progressive family. Idowu’s contributions to the growth of Ilesa and Osun will be missed,” he said.
