Sh*ckwave In Politics: PDP, LP Lawmakers Dump Parties For New Movement
The Action Peoples Party (APP) has strengthened its presence in the National Assembly following the defection of two serving members of the House of Representatives. According to Ireporter Online, the lawmakers, Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere and Mathew Nwaogu, formally announced their resignation from their former political parties during plenary on Tuesday.
Ugochinyere, who was elected under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Nwaogu, previously a member of the Labour Party (LP), communicated their decisions through separate letters read on the floor of the House by the Speaker, Abbas Tajudeen.
In their correspondence, both legislators attributed their defection to persistent internal crises within their respective parties, noting that the challenges had hindered their active participation and affected their capacity to effectively represent their constituents.
In a move aimed at consolidating its growing influence, the APP subsequently announced the appointment of Ugochinyere as the party’s House of Representatives Caucus Leader. The party’s National Chairman, Uche Nnadi, who was present during plenary, officially welcomed the lawmakers into the party, describing their decision as a significant step toward strengthening democratic governance and legislative performance.
He further stated that the APP remains committed to providing a credible platform for lawmakers dedicated to people-focused governance. The party leadership expressed optimism that the addition of the two legislators would enhance its standing within the National Assembly, while reiterating its openness to accommodating like-minded leaders as it seeks to build a formidable political force grounded in accountability, effective service delivery, and national development.
