Tax Reform Bill Wins Endorsement From South-East Senators Amid Calls For Closer Consultation

While endorsing the bill, the senators emphasized the need for further consultations with key stakeholders to address any concerns regarding the legislation.

This announcement was made by Abia North Senator, Orji Uzor-Kalu, through a brief statement shared on his X handle.

“The Tax Reform Bills were extensively discussed during today’s South-East Senate Caucus, where I participated actively,” Senator Kalu stated. “While we have agreed to support the bill, we also stressed the importance of engaging all major stakeholders in detailed consultations.”

Senator Kalu, a former governor of Abia State, had earlier praised the bill in an interview last week, calling it a transformative piece of legislation that would restore fiscal federalism in Nigeria. He, however, criticized the federal government for not involving the National Economic Council (NEC) and the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) in the drafting process before sending the bill to the National Assembly.

“The bill is very progressive and will reintroduce fiscal federalism,” he remarked. “However, many senators were not properly briefed. The federal government made a mistake by not consulting with the NEC and the Governors’ Forum before advancing the bill.”

Despite these concerns, the overall sentiment within the South-East Senate Caucus is one of strong support for the bill, with calls for greater engagement with stakeholders to ensure its success.
