Tinubu Receives Madagascar President In Aso Rock
According to Ireporter Online, President Bola Tinubu held a closed-door meeting with the President of Madagascar, Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday, in a high-level diplomatic engagement aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between both nations.
The Malagasy leader arrived at the Presidential Villa at about 2:57 pm local time, where he was formally received at the forecourt by a ceremonial guard of bagpipers from the Presidential Brigade of Guards.
Upon arrival, he was welcomed by a delegation led by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, before being ushered into the President’s office complex for a private discussion with President Tinubu.
The visit marks President Randrianirina’s first official trip to Nigeria since assuming office in October 2025 following a political transition that saw the exit of former President Andry Rajoelina. It is also believed to be the first recorded state visit by a Malagasy head of state to Nigeria, with previous engagements between leaders of both countries largely taking place at multilateral or neutral platforms.
The meeting comes weeks after both leaders briefly interacted on the sidelines of the Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi, Kenya, in May, where they reportedly discussed opportunities for closer cooperation.
Although the agenda of Monday’s closed-door session was not officially disclosed, discussions are expected to focus on key areas of mutual interest, including regional security collaboration, agricultural development, and strategies to address the growing impact of climate change, particularly in Madagascar’s southern regions.
Since taking office, President Randrianirina has embarked on a series of diplomatic visits across Africa, including Gabon, while also signalling Madagascar’s interest in strengthening ties with emerging global blocs such as BRICS.
