Veteran Nollywood actor Nkem Owoh has spoken about how his popularity as a comic figure sometimes influences the way people respond to him in real-life situations, even in moments that require seriousness.

According to Ireporter Online, Owoh made this known during an interview with Selah Meditate, where he reflected on how audiences often struggle to separate his on-screen comic persona from his real personality. He explained that because many people are accustomed to seeing him in humorous roles, they often react with laughter even when he is not attempting to be funny.

The actor recalled an incident at a social gathering where he was asked to lead a prayer. He said that immediately he began the prayer with the words “In Jesus’ name,” some attendees could not restrain their laughter. Owoh noted that the reaction left him uncomfortable, stressing that prayer is a solemn and personal act that should be treated with respect. He stated that the experience irritated him because of how seriously he regards moments of prayer.

He also used the opportunity to comment on a growing trend in the film industry where casting decisions are influenced more by social media popularity than by acting ability. Owoh maintained that online fame cannot replace genuine talent, emphasizing that strong performance skills remain essential in filmmaking regardless of an actor’s digital influence.

He further insisted that “social-media fame” cannot substitute real acting talent, adding that no matter how popular a performer becomes online, it does not diminish the importance of authentic skill and professionalism on screen.
