Former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has openly challenged the speculated presidential ambitions of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, questioning what value he would bring to Nigeria’s leadership. During a Friday X Space session titled “Weekend Politics,” the former Transportation Minister argued that Jonathan would only be eligible for a single term if he returned to office.

Amaechi, who played a pivotal role in Jonathan’s 2015 ouster, remained unapologetic about his past actions: “I don’t regret removing GEJ. In fact, I should be praised for saving Nigeria then, just like I’m trying to save Nigeria now.” While Jonathan has not confirmed any political plans, Amaechi insisted the former president’s return bid was imminent, though he provided no concrete evidence.

The political heavyweight’s comments come amid his own strategic moves ahead of 2027. APC chieftain Eze Chukwuemeka Eze revealed that Amaechi’s recent defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) – complete with a massive Port Harcourt homecoming rally – has significantly shaken Nigeria’s political landscape.

Eze described Amaechi’s ADC move as “historical and purposeful,” praising his leadership in forming a coalition to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s reelection. “The overwhelming crowds prove Rivers people are ready for change through ADC in 2027,” Eze stated, positioning Amaechi as the state’s potential liberator from current governance issues.
