The Big Issues: Why Esan Agenda Should Be Tagged Edo Agenda By Osigwe Omo-Ikirodah
Zoning is once again a major and contentious topic as the Edo 2024 governorship election draws near. Considering that the law states that any eligible citizen of Edo may run, is it legal to zone the Governorship to a specific senatorial zone?
Edo State cannot be said to be owned by any single ethnic group or senatorial district; the Edo State project involves the joint ownership of every single tribe and district, and only the issue of rotation keeps the hope alive that one day, every single segment of Edo State will experience the exotic office of the Governor because it will come to their area or zone.
Zoning and rotation are now inextricably linked because zoning is useless without rotation. Rotation is consequently adopted by anyone who adopts zoning. And whoever rejects zoning also rejects rotation by default.
To begin with, zoning brings more focus and torchlight to the zone of the occupant, which is more like God’s Grace upon an anointed one, the office of Governor is not only exotic but also privileged to favours, unmerited favours for that matter.
Zoning makes sure that no part of the state is ever completely shut out of power; for instance, Edo South has been in power since 1992 for a total of 17 years, under the leadership of Oyegun (1 year), Lucky Igbinedion (8 years), and the current Godwin Obaseki (8).
If we take into account the fact that Edo North(Adams Oshiomhole) has been in power for eight years and Esan Central has only been in power for a year (Osunbor), we can better understand how zoning and rotation connect.
Since there are plenty of competent people in every region to steer the ship of leadership, the competency claim has been completely discredited. Rotation, on the other hand, gives other regions a fantastic chance to offer their top performers to serve the people.
Even though it is not Esan’s entitlement to insist on the governorship, every Edo Citizen should be fair enough to advocate for the Esan Agenda as the Edo Agenda, the aura of positivity surrounding the seat is enough anointing that equity and fair play deserve it goes across every region.
It would be fair and just if Esan Land felt a sense of belonging. In order for Edolites to start making their decisions, Esan sons and daughters must organise their affairs and start making the best offers.
