You Are A Priest” — Osinbajo Reveals Moment That Made Him Quit Drinking
Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has shared a personal experience that led him to completely abstain from alcohol, revealing how a brief encounter during an international assignment reshaped his lifestyle.
According to Ireporter Online, Osinbajo, who is also a clergyman, recounted in a widely circulated video that he previously consumed alcohol occasionally, including red wine and beer, despite his pastoral role. He explained that the defining moment occurred during his participation in a United Nations mission in Mogadishu, Somalia.
He narrated that after delivering a sermon on a Sunday, he decided to purchase a few cans of beer before returning to his room. Upon entering a restaurant within the UN camp, he noticed colleagues from various countries who were already drinking. However, his presence appeared to make them uncomfortable, as they quickly attempted to conceal their drinks.
Curious about their reaction, Osinbajo approached one of the colleagues, a Danish national, to inquire why they felt the need to hide their beverages. The colleague responded that they regarded him as a priest and felt it was inappropriate to drink openly in his presence.
The response, he said, left a lasting impact on him, prompting deep reflection about his identity and the expectations others had of him. He noted that the incident made him realize that while certain actions may be permissible, they may not always be appropriate, especially considering one’s influence and responsibilities.
Following that encounter, Osinbajo said he made a firm decision to stop consuming alcohol entirely, emphasizing the importance of aligning personal conduct with the values one represents.
