VAR awarded Bruno Fernandes’ equalizer in the Manchester derby despite Marcus Rashford being in an offside position.

In the 78th minute, the Portugal international scored off Casemiro’s assist to bring Manchester United back into the game. The Brazilian sent a through ball to Rashford, who began his run in an offside position. The English forward did not touch the ball, instead passing it to Fernandes, who scored with a curling shot from the edge of the box.

Despite the linesman ruling the strike out for offside, referee Stuart Atwell awarded the goal after consulting VAR because Rashford did not touch the ball or interfere with any of the Manchester City defenders. The visitors were enraged after the midfielder’s goal was upheld.

Following the game, the Premier League informed TV broadcasters that the “The flag was raised, the ref and linesman conferred, and it was determined that Rashford had no touch on the ball and had no impact on the defender’s ability to play the ball. VAR found no evidence of clear and obvious error and thus supports the goal.”
