Politically Motivated Police Brutality: Hon. Dennis Idahosa Takes A Stand For Inikorogha Community
Rt Hon. Dennis Idahosa, a proactive lawmaker, has demonstrated his commitment to putting his people first by raising a motion on the floor of the House of Representatives to address the indiscriminate behavior of members of the Nigerian Police Force in his constituency, particularly in Inikorogha Community, Ovia South West Local Government Area of Edo State.
This motion highlights the essence of responsive governance and the importance of safeguarding the rights and well-being of citizens in the face of security challenges.
The motion is crucial as it sheds light on the dire situation in Inikorogha Community, where police personnel have allegedly been engaging in unprofessional conduct, including harassment, molestation, and intimidation of the indigenes, especially those who do not support theAll Progressives Congress, APC.
Such actions by security agents undermine citizens’ fundamental rights to freely associate with any political party and express their political preferences without fear of persecution.
Furthermore, the motion emphasizes the grave consequences of security agents’ imperialistic attitudes and political oppression, which have led to fatalities, abuse of law-abiding women, and the displacement of community leaders.
The alarming presence of heavily armed police officers and the misuse of security vehicles, such as the mounting of a General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG) on one of the Hilux vehicles, raise serious concerns about the safety and well-being of the affected community members.
The House’s resolution to urge the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to immediately withdraw the over 30 personnel officers stationed in Inikorogha Community is a crucial step towards restoring peace and ensuring the protection of the citizens’ rights in the area. By doing so, it sends a strong message that unprofessional conduct and abuse of power by security personnel will not be tolerated.
Additionally, the House’s decision to set up an Ad hoc Committee to investigate the unprofessional conduct and unwarranted attacks on indigenes of the Inikorogha Community by Police personnel is commendable. This investigative process will help identify the root causes of the issues and hold those responsible accountable for their actions.
The committee’s report will provide valuable insights and pave the way for further legislative action, ensuring that justice is served and necessary reforms are implemented to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
In summary, Hon. Dennis Idahosa’s proactive approach to addressing the indiscriminate behavior of the Nigerian Police Force in his constituency demonstrates his dedication to serving his people and protecting their rights.
The motion’s essence lies in safeguarding citizens’ rights and promoting a responsive and accountable government. The House’s resolution signifies a commitment to justice and accountability, ensuring that those responsible for the misconduct are held accountable, and measures are taken to prevent future abuses of power.
