Drama As Shaibu Storms Out Of Edo Event After Security Officers Deny Aides Entry (VIDEO)
During a government function on Monday, Philip Shaibu, the Deputy Governor of Edo State, abruptly left the venue after his aides were denied entry by security officials.
The event, hosted by Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki, aimed to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Midwest Referendum. It took place at the Victor Uwaifo Creative Hub on Airport Road in Benin City, the state capital.
Shaibu arrived at the venue along with his aides while the governor was delivering his opening remarks. However, security personnel at the entrance prevented the deputy governor’s aides from entering the hall.

Despite the security officers’ attempts to provide explanations and resolve the situation, Shaibu insisted that his aides accompany him. After a few minutes of unsuccessful negotiations, he directed his aides to leave with him, commanding, “Let’s go.”
Later, Shaibu was observed getting into his car.
For weeks, tensions between Shaibu and Obaseki have caused them to avoid communication. Obaseki, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and in his second term as governor, accused Shaibu of disloyalty, alleging that his deputy was planning to defect to another party for the upcoming state elections.
In contrast, Shaibu, who obtained a court order to halt his “impeachment” by the governor and the Edo Assembly, refuted these allegations and affirmed his loyalty to Obaseki.
The referendum, which took place on July 13, 1963, paved the way for the formation of the Midwestern Region of Nigeria. The region was subsequently renamed Bendel State in 1976, which is now represented by Edo and Delta states. The colloquium organized by the state government was part of the celebrations marking the Diamond anniversary of the Referendum. It aimed to convene leaders from both states and other stakeholders to discuss future directions.
