Obasa Speaks On Sanwo-Olu Rejected Commissioner-Nominees

Approximately one week after the Lagos State House of Assembly declined the confirmation of 17 out of the 39 commissioner-nominees proposed by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for screening, the Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa, has clarified that the lawmakers are not engaged in a “fight” against the governor.

Presiding over the Monday session of the House, the Speaker emphasized that regardless of any attempts at intimidation, the Assembly will not reveal the details of its findings from the screening process of the rejected nominees.

Obasa firmly stated that no form of pressure or coercion will lead the Assembly to alter its constitutional decision regarding the governor’s nominees who were rejected.

Highlighting his longstanding relationship with Governor Sanwo-Olu, the Speaker underlined their history of working together and emphasized that decisions that differ from the governor’s requests do not equate to opposition or confrontation.

He pointed out that the Assembly has issued numerous resolutions in the past that were not implemented by the executive branch, without drawing the same level of attention or interpretation.

Obasa asserted that the Assembly was acting within its constitutional obligations by both confirming and rejecting certain commissioner-nominees proposed by the governor.

Furthermore, he mentioned that his primary concern is safeguarding the interests of his political party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).

While maintaining his commitment to the party, he assured that the Assembly will not compromise its dedication to public service in favor of technocratic considerations.

Obasa concluded by indicating that if anyone seeks to understand the rationale behind the Assembly’s decisions, they are welcome to approach the House for clarification. However, he noted that the Assembly has chosen to refrain from disclosing the specifics of its discoveries during the screening process, and this stance will not be altered under external pressure.
