Independence Day: FG To Honour Akinkunmi, 10 Others (FULL LIST)

The late Pa Taiwo Michael Akinkunmi, the visionary behind Nigeria’s national flag, alongside ten other esteemed Nigerian heroes, are set to receive the Citizenship and Patriots Award in anticipation of the country’s 63rd Independence Day celebration on Sunday.

Nigeria gained independence from Great Britain on October 1, 1960.

The tribute to these national heroes, organized by the National Orientation Agency (NOA) as part of its efforts to advance civic education in Nigeria, is slated for October 5, 2023.

Among the honorees are Naval Rating Salaudeen Akano, who raised the Nigerian flag at midnight to commemorate the nation’s independence in 1960, as well as the late Commander Onwurah Zonyanuno Chiazor, the commandant who issued the order for Salaudeen to hoist the national flag.

Others on the list include John A. Ilechukwu, Eme Etim Akpan, B. A. Ogunnaike, Sota Omoigui, and P. O. Aderibigbe, all of whom contributed to the lyrics of the country’s National Anthem.

Also, set to be recognized is the man who oversaw the composition of the national anthem by the Nigerian Police Band, the late Benedict E. Odiase.

Additionally, the woman credited with creating the National Pledge, the late Mrs. Felicia Adebola Adedoyin, and her friend Adewusi, who introduced her to the President, will also be honored.

Speaking to reporters in preparation for the event, Dr. Garba Abari, the Director General of NOA, mentioned that September 16 of each year has been designated as National Symbols Day, and September 30 as Citizens’ and Patriots’ Day.

Abari explained that Symbols’ Day commemorates the signing into law of Nigeria’s Coat of Arms and National Ordinance in 1960, leading up to Nigeria’s Independence Day. This day also serves as a reminder for citizens to treat Nigeria’s national symbols with pride, loyalty, and respect, recognizing them as emblems representing the sovereignty and presence of Nigeria.

He emphasized the crucial need for more patriots in Nigeria to address the current challenges facing the nation. Abari stressed that citizens must rise up with initiatives that can bring necessary solutions, even if it involves personal sacrifice, in order to advance the progress of their homeland.
