Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba state has sanctioned an annual package of N395,000.00 for members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) stationed in schools across the state. The State’s Commissioner for Information and Re-orientation, Zainab Usman, made this announcement in a statement released on Sunday.

As per the approval, corps members will receive N25,000.00 as accommodation allowance per term, a one-time payment of N50,000.00, and N10,000.00 as monthly support from the state government. A detailed breakdown of the package indicates that corps members assigned to schools in the state will receive the following throughout their 11 months of national service: N50,000.00 for medical allowance, N225,000.00 for housing allowance (N25,000.00 for each of the three terms of the academic calendar), and N120,000.00 for stipends (N10,000.00 for each of the 12 months of service to the state government).

The governor’s approval stems from the surge in school enrollment following the government’s initiative of providing free basic education, along with uniforms and other learning materials. Mrs. Usman stated, “The surge in new enrollments witnessed in our primary and secondary schools over the past ten working days has necessitated immediate action.”

In response to the education situation, Governor Kefas also granted significant allowances for NYSC members serving in Taraba State schools. This includes an additional ten thousand naira added to their monthly allowance, a one-time payment of fifty thousand naira as a medical allowance, and an accommodation allowance of twenty-five thousand naira per term, totaling seventy-five thousand naira for three terms. Additionally, outstanding Youth Corps members who excel during their service in schools will be offered automatic employment opportunities.

Furthermore, to support students in their pursuit of education, uniforms, shoes, socks, and books will be made available starting from January. An ICT-based registration system will be introduced this term for both new and returning students and teachers, guaranteeing the provision of essential school materials upon their arrival.

Governor Kefas has also directed the state’s Ministry of Education and Ministry of Youth and Sports Development to ensure the prompt implementation of the new measures approved by the state government. Additionally, in the coming year, the State Government will cover examination fees for all SS3 students, enabling them to write both WAEC and NECO examinations. Outstanding students will be eligible for sponsorship and scholarships. Adult learners seeking new enrollment are advised to visit the various Mass Education Centers, ensuring accessibility to education for all.
