When individuals hold positions of power, such as governors or presidents, they are constantly inundated with calls from diverse groups seeking favors, political backing, and business opportunities.

However, the dynamics undergo a profound shift once they depart from their positions. The dwindling phone calls serve as a stark reminder of the transience of power and the transactional nature of political relationships.

As we look forward to the Edo gubernatorial election, the identity of the next occupant of Dennis Osadebay Avenue in Benin City, whether a loyalist of Godwin Obaseki, a candidate from the APC, or an LP nominee, is uncertain.

Nevertheless, one certainty looms large: Obaseki, the current tenant, will be moving on. This prompts a pivotal question: Where will Obaseki find himself when the ceaseless ringing of his phone falls silent?

The significance of this question stems from the multitude of battles Obaseki has waged during his tenure, transcending political, social, and traditional spheres. His initial clash with predecessor Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, a key figure in his political journey, set the stage.

Obaseki’s discord with his own political party, the APC, marked by the prolonged refusal to inaugurate 14 EDHA members, further underscored his confrontational approach. This ultimately led him to defect to the PDP, where he clinched re-election.

Remarkably, Obaseki’s internal frictions extend to the PDP, as he appears to sideline legacy members and grapple with conflicts involving key supporters like Nyesom Wike. Presently, Obaseki is embroiled in a bitter feud with his deputy, Philip Shaibu, while his strained relationship with the Benin Traditional Council raises concerns among citizens.

If the phone ceases to ring for Obaseki, where will he chart his course? Given his history of disputes with a spectrum of political figures, including those who played pivotal roles in his career, will he return to Lagos in solitary contemplation or seek fresh political alliances?

In essence, the potential reduction in phone calls after leaving office would underline the ever-evolving dynamics of political relationships. This scenario would serve as a poignant reminder of the ongoing need to uphold principles and values, irrespective of one’s societal status. As Obaseki contemplates an uncertain future in the complex world of Edo politics, this lesson remains highly relevant.
