FULL LIST Of Sacked State Governors And The Reasons Given By The Court

In a verdict rendered on Sunday, the Court of Appeal, led by Justice Elphreda Williams-Dawodu, directed the Independent National Electoral Commission to withdraw the Certificate of Return issued to Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State.

The court declared Nentawe Goshwe of the All Progressives Congress as the rightful winner of the March 18 governorship election, instructing INEC to issue a new Certificate of Return to him.

Several governors have been ousted by the courts in recent months, following contested elections and a declaration of one election as inconclusive.

Here is a list of removed state governors and the grounds provided by the court:

1. Abba Kabir Yusuf (NNPP):
   • The NNPP candidate won by a margin of 128,897 votes.
   • The Election Petitions Tribunal invalidated the election, declaring 165,663 votes garnered by Yusuf as invalid due to unsigned and unstamped ballot papers.
   • The Court of Appeal in Abuja upheld the tribunal’s decision, stating that Yusuf was not on his party’s membership list, leading to disqualification.
2. Abdullahi Sule (APC):
   • The Nasarawa State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal annulled Governor Sule’s victory and ordered INEC to revoke his Certificate of Return.
   • The tribunal found discrepancies in votes, deducted incorrect votes added to Sule, and added back votes reduced from David Ombugadu, the PDP candidate.
   • The Court of Appeal in Abuja reserved judgment on the appeal.
3. Dauda Lawal (PDP):
   • The Court of Appeal declared the Zamfara State governorship election inconclusive and ordered new elections in two local governments.
   • The court stated that Lawal’s election was invalid, and his opponent, Bello Matawalle, successfully established the irregularity.
4. Caleb Mutfwang (PDP):
   • The Court of Appeal ruled that Governor Mutfwang was not validly sponsored by the PDP for the election, citing Section 177 of the Constitution.
   • The PDP failed to comply with a High Court order, requiring the organization of a legitimate party congress before endorsing candidates.
   • Governor Mutfwang has directed his legal team to appeal to the Supreme Court, expressing hope for the reinstatement of his mandate.
