Shaibu and Obaseki

The deputy governor of Edo State, Comrade Philip Shaibu, clarified that there is no competition with Governor Godwin Obaseki regarding the payment of the hospital bills for the attacked players and officials of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) side, Sunshine Stars Football Club of Akure.

Officials representing Governor Obaseki, including high-ranking members of his administration and personal aides, visited the hospital where the players and officials were receiving treatment.

The team had been attacked by armed robbers on the Ore-Benin Expressway while traveling to Benin for an NPFL Match 13 against Bendel Insurance.

Comrade Philip Shaibu also independently visited the players and officials in the hospital and later at their undisclosed hotel. Following the attack, a ball boy was shot, and the players and officials were severely traumatized.

Governor Obaseki, known for his commitment to sports, provided substantial support and assistance to the affected individuals. He offered to cover the medical expenses for all those involved in the unfortunate incident. Comrade Shaibu also took similar actions, ensuring that the necessary medical bills were addressed.

Edo deputy governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ebomhiana Musa, said on Sunday evening: “Our attention has been drawn to the fact that His Excellency, the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has directed that the medical bill of the injured Ball Boy and Kit Manager of Sunshine Stars FC of Akure be paid by Edo State government.

“Consequently, the state’s Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. (Comrade) Philip Shaibu, has withdrawn his earlier promise to pay the medical bill. He, however, said the cash gift he gave the players, when he visited them in their hotel on Saturday, remains.

“The office of Governor and Deputy Governor are one. We are not in any way in competition.”

Shaibu emphasized that he responded promptly to the unfortunate incident due to his deep passion and love for football. Drawing from his own experiences in the sport, he empathized with the feelings of the players, underscoring the personal connection that motivated his swift action.
