The court’s decision comes after a careful examination of the case and consideration of the charges against the Lagos-based cleric.

The accusations against Bishop Daniels emerged in May 2023, leading to his remand in court for allegedly raping a 25-year-old woman at his Lekki residence. The reported victim testified that the sexual assault occurred during a prayer session, where the cleric engaged in inappropriate conduct while speaking in tongues.

In the court’s judgment on Friday, Judge Rahman Oshodi found Bishop Daniels guilty of both rape and sexual assault against a female worshipper. The cleric had maintained his innocence throughout the trial, asserting that three out of the four women who accused him had conspired against him.

During the cross-examination, the prosecution’s lead counsel, Babajide Boye, aimed to establish a personal relationship between Bishop Daniels and the accusers. Boye alleged that the defendant had provided counseling, financial assistance, and had connections with the women in question.

While defending himself, Bishop Daniels denied the allegations, stating that he believed the women had turned against him, except for one who later apologized.

The prosecution further accused the defendant of exploiting his role as a Bishop to manipulate individuals seeking counseling, an allegation that Bishop Daniels vehemently denied.

In a controversial move, the prosecutor sought to submit four statements allegedly authored by the defendant during his time in police custody, aiming to use them to impeach his testimony. Despite objections from the defense counsel, Adebayo Adegbite, Justice Oshodi admitted the documents.

The court’s decision to impose a life sentence on Bishop Feyi Daniels underscores the gravity of the charges and serves as a significant legal outcome in a case that has garnered public attention.
