Mrs. Adebayo Benjamins-Laniyi, the Mandate Secretary, conveyed her apprehensions during a press conference marking her 100 days in office. She revealed that a total of 3,072 GBV cases had been reported in recent times in the FCT, with a significant portion—2,000 cases—reported within the last 100 days.
Benjamins-Laniyi attributed the surge in reported cases to the increasing confidence residents now have in the current administration. She asserted her unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety of all women, adolescents, and even men, actively addressing the issue of GBV.
The Mandate Secretary vowed to adopt an all-encompassing governance approach, striving for the inclusion of everyone in fulfilling her duties. Additionally, she outlined plans to revive the disbanded FCT female football team, the FCT Queens.
Detailing key activities from her initial 100 days in office, Benjamins-Laniyi highlighted stakeholder consultations, familiarization visits to key stakeholders and women groups, and sensitization efforts targeting the wives of traditional rulers and Area Council Chairmen in the FCT on GBV.
She also provided insights into her participation in events such as the 2023 UN Women 16 days of advocacy against GBV in FCT and hosting the First Lady’s Renewal Hope Humanitarian Programme for the aged.
Furthermore, the Mandate Secretary conducted tours of various facilities under her office, including the FCT Unity Children’s Home in Gwako, Gwagwalada, FCT Transit Home/Juvenile Correctional Centre, Karu Children’s Home, Baby Friendly Centres/Creches in Areas 11 and Area 3, FCT Women Vocational and Empowerment Centre in Zuba, and several other projects like the Poultry Farm Project in Pasali and Groundnut Processing Centre in Kulo, Abaji.
