Tragic Accident In Lagos: Articulated Truck Driver Apprehended After Fatally Crushing Scavenger

The incident occurred around Mile 12 market on Ikorodu Road, Lagos.

The accident involved a 16-tyre articulated truck with registration ‘DAF’ (LSR 901 XV) and a scavenger pushing a wheelbarrow on the main carriageway.

According to Mr. Adebayo Taofiq, the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, preliminary investigations revealed that the driver lost control due to brake failure, resulting in the tragic collision.

While LASTMA officers were able to rescue the scavenger immediately after the accident, he later succumbed to injuries while being rushed to a nearby hospital.

The aftermath saw an outpour of anger from bystanders, prompting the intervention of LASTMA officials and security personnel who managed to rescue the truck driver and take him to Ketu Police Divisional Headquarters.

LASTMA’s General Manager, Mr. Bakare-Oki Olalekan, appealed to market leaders to conduct regular safety enlightenment campaigns regarding the risks of using wheelbarrows on highways.

Additionally, he issued a stern warning to truck drivers, urging them to avoid overspeeding and ensure the proper maintenance of their vehicles’ braking systems before embarking on journeys within or outside the state.
