The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Maduebibisi Iwe, announced the suspension of academic activities in the wake of the tumultuous protest that disrupted the campus’s tranquility.
In a swift response to the escalating situation, the university management ordered an immediate closure of the institution to safeguard lives and property on campus.
Students were directed to vacate the premises by 5:00 pm on Tuesday, February 6, 2024, as tensions ran high amidst reports of vandalism and attacks on university officials and property.
Expressing their grievances, students lamented being barred from writing exams unless they complied with the new fee structure, exacerbating the already tense atmosphere.
In a bid to restore calm, the Student Union Government’s General Secretary, Enyioma Godslove, appealed for peace, urging fellow students to refrain from violence and destruction.
However, scenes of chaos ensued as police intervention intensified, with officers firing shots into the air to disperse the protesting students, leading to panic among market traders nearby.
This shutdown echoes recent student protests across Nigerian universities, underscoring widespread discontent over fee hikes and demands for accessible education amidst economic challenges.
