Investigation: Medical Certificate Fraud Rocks Kwara Government Hospitals

The investigation began with a firsthand account of a visit to Ilorin General Hospital, where the journalist’s son was being treated for malaria. Witnessing individuals attempting to obtain medical certificates without proper tests, Ahmed embarked on a deeper investigation to uncover the extent of the issue.
At Ilorin General Hospital, the journalist discovered a systematic process for obtaining medical certificates by proxy. Patients were directed to undergo a series of tests without proper identification or verification, with some medical staff members facilitating the process for a fee.
Similar practices were uncovered at Offa General Hospital, where individuals could obtain medical reports without undergoing any tests. Despite the risks involved, some hospital staff members were willing to bypass proper procedures for monetary gain.
Legal experts highlighted the severe consequences of medical certificate forgery, emphasizing that it constitutes a criminal offense punishable by imprisonment. They called for stricter enforcement of laws to deter fraudulent activities in the healthcare sector.
Despite efforts to address the issue, including attempts to reach the Kwara State Commissioner for Health, concerns remain regarding the integrity of medical certification processes in government hospitals.
The investigation, supported by the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ), underscores the urgent need for regulatory measures to combat medical certificate fraud and ensure the credibility of healthcare services in Kwara State.
