During an appearance on Channels Television Politics Today, Shittu emphasized the potential of many bandits as capable individuals whom the government should consider integrating into society.

He stressed the importance of adopting nonviolent strategies in dealing with banditry, believing that such approaches could lead to positive outcomes.

Shittu stated, “If I am in a position, it is not too late to use non-kinetic measures in negotiating with bandits, giving them a promising future. Let us retain them. Many of them are very intelligent, many of them are able-bodied.”

The former minister expressed concern about the significant number of children in Northern Nigeria who are not attending school, attributing this phenomenon to the proliferation of banditry in the region.

Shittu’s remarks align with a recent call by controversial Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, who also advocated for negotiations with bandits and cautioned against adopting former President Muhammadu Buhari’s approach of refusing to engage with them.

As discussions on addressing banditry continue, voices advocating for dialogue and nonviolent measures are gaining prominence, highlighting the complexities of the security challenges facing Nigeria.
