‘We Have No Hope Of Fair Trial’ – Nnamdi Kanu’s Lawyers

At a media briefing held on Friday, the lawyers expressed frustration over the challenges Kanu faces in adequately preparing his defense against the charges of treasonable felony and terrorism due to limited access to legal counsel and interference by security operatives.
Kanu has been in DSS custody since 2021 when he was forcibly brought back to Nigeria from Kenya to face trial. He was initially arrested in 2015 and later granted bail in 2017, which was revoked in 2019 when he allegedly failed to appear in court.
Despite the abandonment of some charges against him and the Supreme Court’s acknowledgment of procedural flaws in his extradition, Kanu’s legal team asserts that his continued detention undermines his right to a fair trial.
Lead counsel Aloy Ejimakor criticized the government for denying Kanu access to adequate facilities to prepare his defense and highlighted instances where their meetings with Kanu were monitored or disrupted by security agents.
The legal team emphasized that Kanu’s detention hampers their ability to mount a robust defense and called for a political solution to resolve the case, citing precedents where the government discontinued prosecutions in similar cases.
While expressing readiness to explore any viable solution, the lawyers urged President Bola Tinubu’s administration to review Kanu’s case impartially and consider the possibility of a political resolution.
The lawyers’ plea reflects growing concerns over Kanu’s prolonged detention and the need for a fair and transparent legal process in his case.
As Kanu’s trial continues, the spotlight remains on the Nigerian government’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice for all parties involved.
